How to use Room Designer

Press New room in the top-right. Pick Blank to draw your own, or a furnished template — Small home (hall, kitchen, bedroom and toilet), living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom or home office — and change it to suit. Starting a new design can be undone, so you never lose the one before.

Have a floor plan already? Press Floorplan to upload a photo, PDF or DXF of it, set its scale by dragging across a dimension you know, then trace over it or let the app find the walls.

1. Press Trace walls.
2. Click each corner in turn. Walls stay straight — level or upright — however your hand moves, and the length shows as you draw.
3. Press Enter to close the loop. The floor fills in when the walls enclose a space.
4. Esc when you are done.

Hold Shift for a 45° wall, or Alt to place a corner exactly where you click. Backspace removes the last corner. For a plain rectangle, type the width and length in the room panel and press Draw instead.

A home is several rooms sharing walls. Two ways to add one:

• By size: click an outside wall, and in its panel under Add a room type a name and two sizes. The room is built on the empty side of that wall, sharing it.
• By tracing: start and finish on corners of an existing room — corners snap together — and the walls join up.

Each room’s name and area appear on the plan and in the Rooms list at the top of the room panel, where you can rename them.

For a house of more than one storey — a first floor, a loft, a basement:

1. Finish the walls of the ground floor first. The new floor starts from its outside walls.
2. Add the stairs on the ground floor from Furniture → Structure: a timber staircase (treads, risers, balusters), an open-riser one (steel stringers, glass balustrade), a concrete one (stone-finished steps), a floating one (thick treads fixed into a wall — put its left side against one) or a central spine one (treads on a single steel beam). Drag it where it rises and turn it so its bottom step faces where you walk up from. A straight flight is 900 mm wide and 3 m long; where that will not fit, the L-shaped (2.4 × 2.4 m) and U-shaped (1.8 × 2.4 m) ones turn at a landing, the winder one (2.2 × 2.0 m) turns on three tapered steps instead, and a spiral one fits in a 1.6 m square. Treads, structure and rail can all be recoloured, and the treads given another finish — tile or carpet on concrete steps, say.
3. Press + Floor in the toolbar. You are now on the first floor: the outside walls are already there, the ground floor’s walls show faintly underneath, and the stairwell is marked Stairs up where the flight arrives, with a guard rail round the opening on every side but the one you step off from, and none where it meets a wall.
4. Draw the rooms upstairs over the faint walls — trace them, or select a wall and use Add a room — and furnish them as usual.
5. Switch floors with the buttons beside + Floor. The floor you are on has a ▾ menu to rename it, add a basement below, or delete it.

In 3D the floors stack at their real heights, and you can see the stairs through the opening in the floor above. The quote covers every floor, with a plan page for each.

• Click anything in the Furniture catalogue to add it, or drag it onto the plan.
• Drag to move; use the corner handles to resize and the top handle to rotate.
• Doors, windows, wall cabinets and wall lights snap onto the nearest wall.
• Select an item to recolour each of its surfaces, change its size exactly, or duplicate it. Some surfaces also take a Finish: a worktop in stone or timber, stair steps in stone, tile, timber or carpet.
• A door’s swing is drawn on the plan and warns you if something is parked in it.
• Products from our listed suppliers carry the supplier’s name. Place one like any item; select it for a link to the product. Sponsored ones are listed first, and may be suggested as a swap for a plain item of the same size.
• Have a 3D model of a real product? Under My models, Import 3D model (.glb) brings it in at its real size, compressed (Draco, Meshopt or KTX2) or not. The file stays on your device; elsewhere, and in shared links, it shows as a box of the same size.

Click the wall the kitchen goes on. Under Fitted kitchen, choose the units that matter in order — sink, cooker, dishwasher, fridge — and the rest of the wall fills with standard cupboards, with wall cabinets above and a hood over the cooker. For an L or U shape, give the first wall a corner unit (L-shaped or blind), then plan the next wall.

• Style restyles the whole home in one click — Japandi, Mid-century, Minimalist, Warm beige or Modern.
• Rooms: tap a room’s swatch to give it its own floor, such as tiles in the toilet.
• Surfaces: floor, walls, ceiling and trim colours. Click one wall on the plan to make it an accent wall.
• Mouldings: skirting height, coving or cornice, and a dado rail with or without panelling.

Switch to 3D (or Split for plan and 3D side by side). Drag to turn, scroll to zoom. Walk through stands you in the room at eye height: drag to look, W A S D or the arrow keys to move, Esc to leave. Lights on shows the room lit by its own fittings; in daylight, the time and month slider moves the sun, set by the room’s north and latitude.

The room panel measures floor, walls, ceiling and mouldings off the plan, with doors and windows deducted, across every floor. Open Rates & assumptions and enter your prices — every rate starts at zero. Export quote (PDF) adds your client, reference and terms and produces an A4 quote with the plan to scale, the rooms, finishes and a schedule of everything in it.

• Your design saves automatically in this browser. Sign in to keep it in your account across devices.
• Share makes a view-only link: anyone with it can look around in 3D and see the plan, without an account and without being able to change yours.
• Save image in the 3D view downloads a picture of what is on screen.
• Describe this room for an AI writes the design out as a prompt for an image or language model.
